Fools Crow and the Interpretation of Dreams

Later in the novel, after Yellow Kidney’s return, and White Man’s Dog sharing his dream of the white-faced women with Mik-api, and the healing of his spirit, and his acceptance of Wolverine as his “totem” animal, after his day vision of Raven, we come to see a boy transformed to a man. This happens at the Sun Dance ceremony. He dances at the Medicine Pole and becomes a real man. It’s like a metamorphosis, in that the pain he feels is a transforming force in his life. During his recovery from the dance, he has a dream of the Wolverine, it comes to him like a brother, and his manhood is secured. This dream also brings about a resolution to a nagging problem in the story of his past attraction to his near mother, Kills-close-to-the-Lake. In the dream, a woman comes to him after Wolverine has presented him with a white stone. When he wakes, Kills-close-to-the-Lake comes to find him, and he sees he hand bandaged. She tells him she sacrificed a finger, and her dream of Wolverine coming to her and biting off her finger after she let the beast ravage her.

But it is mostly a story of accepting the past, acknowledging the grief, and healing the spiritual hurt, so that one day the sacred hoop will be mended.

Allotments were the worst idea, in the history of bad ideas, regarding tribal nations, since the move to the reservations, in that they robbed the sense of common landownership from the nations, which was a central idea to the function of the societies that existed at that time.

Who is Kennewick Man?

In 1990 a federal law called the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) was passed. Court cases brought by five Native American tribes (the Umatilla, Nez Perce, Yakama, Wanapum and Colville) intended to show that this ancient skeleton was found in lands that are considered native and therefore it must be considered Indian with rights of reburial under the Act. Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbett held that to be true and ordered the remains returned to the tribal lands for reburial. This was the goal of the tribes. However, a district court judge ruled in favor of the scientists, who sued for continued access to the skeleton, that there was no perceivable link to the tribes in relation to the remains.

Cherokee Nation V. Georgia An Examination of Word-play in the Supreme Court Decision

And the word guardian is defined as a legal term as “a person who is entrusted by law with the care of the person or property, or both, of another, as a minor or someone legally incapable of managing his or her own affairs.” Guardian is also a synonym for warden. So, basically, what it sounds like, despite all the legal jargon is that the Supreme Court said to the Cherokee Nation, and thereby all nations of Indians, that not only are they not independent sovereign nations, they are in fact dependent nations. Dependent on the government for everything; they are like immature children, and not competent to make decisions that relate to themselves or their property.
